The Cannon Balls are a series of 3 mountains on the Kinsman Ridge Trail in Franconia, NH in the White Mountains. The highest peak on the ridge is the Northeast Cannon Ball at 3,769 feet. The other 2 peaks in this ridge have elevations of 3,693 feet and 3,660 feet.

The name Cannon Balls comes from the view you get from Mount Cannon, which looks like a series of boulders from the foot of the mountain in a row (which resembles a cannon).

Northeast Cannon Ball Trail Maps Top

The map below shows how to get to the summit of Northeast Cannon Ball.

From the Lafayette Campground Parking lot head up the Lonesome Lake Trail. After 0.4 miles you will come to a junction with another trail on the right. Stay left to continue on the Lonesome Lake Trail for 0.8 miles where you will come to another junction. Stay straight(ish) to stay on the Lonesome Lake Trail. Hike for 1.1 miles on the Lonesome Lake Trail (you will come to a junction after 0.2 miles, but stay left) where you find yourself at a junction with the Kinsman Ridge Trail to your left and right would take you to Mount Cannon. Go left onto the Kinsman Ridge Trail and hike for roughly 0.3 miles until you reach the wooded, viewless summit of Northeast Cannon Ball. There is no sign indicating you are at the summit, but there was a cairn that could still be there.

To get back to the parking lot, retrace your steps the same way you hiked up.

Northeast Cannon Ball Driving Directions Top

These are driving directions to the Lafayette Campground Parking area
Take exit 34b from I-93 North toward Cannon Mountain Tramway / Old Man historic Site. Drive 0.2 miles and turn left to get back onto the highway (to reverse the direction). Get on I-93 South and drive 2.1 miles until you see the Lafayette Campground parking area. Take that exit on the right.

If you have a GPS, you can put in Lafayette Campground in Franconia, NH.
