Galehead Mountain is a 4,024 foot mountain in the Twin Range in Franconia, New Hampshire (Grafton County) in the White Mountains. The summit itself has no views, but there is a great view-point near the summit with beautiful views. It lies at the top of the Frost Trail: a half mile trail beginning at the Galehead Hut.

There are many trails a hiker can choose to begin at, but the Gale River Trail is the most direct, and shortest route. It begins at the Gale River Trail Parking lot off of Gale River Loop Road.

Galehead Mountain Trail Maps - Directions from the parking lot to the summit Top

The map below shows how to get to the summit of Galehead Mountain.

Begin at the Gale River Trail head off Gale River Loop Road. Hike up the Gale River Trail for 4 miles (the majority of this part of the hike is along the North Branch of the Gale River). Once you reach the Garfield Ridge Trail, which is also the Appalachian Trail, go left for 0.6 miles until you reach the Galehead Hut. From the hut, head up the Frost Trail which begins just outside the front of the hut. You will reach the summit in half a mile. There is no views from the summit, but stop at the view point along the Frost Trail for great views!

The parking lot for this hike is located on Gale River Loop Road off Route 3 in Bethlehem, New Hampshire.

To the Gale River parking lot
Take exit 35 off I-93 onto Route 3 North towards Twin Mountain/Lancaster. Drive 4.8 miles on Route 3 then turn right onto Gale River Loop Road. Follow the road until you see the sign for the Gale River Parking Lot. (You will pass the Garfield Trail head parking lot).
