Eastern White Mountains / Mahoosuc Range, Maine Information |
The Eastern White Mountains / Mahoosuc Range is a northern extension of the White Mountains. It stretches from New Hampshire to Maine. Its highest peak is Old Speck Mountain in Maine at 4,170 feet. (The fourth highest peak in Maine.)
Also included in the range is the Mahoosuc Range, which is a deep gap in the range in Maine that is considered the hardest and slowest part of the Appalachian Trail. Even the most experienced hikers can have difficulty here. It has been called "killer mile", and "toughest mile" by thru-hikers. The Appalachian Trail traverses the main ridge of the Mahoosucs between Shelburne, New Hampshire, and Grafton Notch in Maine.
