Black Mountain is a 2,830 foot mountain in Benton, NH just northwest of Mount Moosilauke. It is part of the 52 with a View hiking list, as the summit offers wonderful views in many directions from its many ledges.

The most common route up to the summit of Black Mountain is via the Chippewa Trail off Lime Kiln Road. There are several view points off rock ledges before you even reach the summit. The mountain was once home to a fire tower that has since been removed.

Near the beginning of the trail there is a left-hand turn leading to the old lime kilns. See photo below.

The map below shows how to get to the summit of Black Mountain.

From the traillhead off Lime Kiln Road in Benton, NH (see driving directions towards the bottom of the page), hike up the Chippewa Trail for 1.8 miles until you reach the summit of Black Mountain. After enjoying the summit views, to get back to the parking area, retrace your steps back down the Chippewa Trail 1.8 miles.

One of the kilns off the Chippewa Trail on 4-12-2015. They were used to heat up the lime rock nearby, hence the name of the road the traillhead is on; Lime Kiln Road.



Black Mountain (in Benton, NH) Driving Directions Top

These are driving directions to the Chippewa Trail Traillhead Parking lot:
Take exit 26 off I-93 to route 3A South, which eventually turns into 25 West. After 4 miles from the highway, you will reach a traffic circle. Take the first exit at the traffic circle to NH 25 West (Mt Moosilauke Highway). Drive just over 25 miles and turn right onto Lime Kiln Road. Bear left at the fork in the road to stay on Lime Kiln Road. Drive roughly 3 miles to the parking area and traillhead on the right side of the road.

If you have a GPS, put in Lime Kiln Road in Haverhill, NH. The parking area is roughly 3 miles from Route 25 (Mt Moosilauke Highway).
